Position Summary
BCIT’s School of Energy is seeking 2 temporary Faculty (available as a combination of halftime and fulltime positions). This position will deliver lectures and laboratory activities, evaluate student progress, supervise student projects, and support the day-to-day operations of the department. As a valued member of our team of respected faculty with extensive industry experience and knowledge, the successful candidate will bring practical skills to the classroom, inspiring and guiding future practitioners in their field.

BCIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Technology offers diplomas in electrical engineering technology with options in automation and instrumentation, electrical power and industrial control, and telecommunications and networking, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering.

Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in subject areas related to automation and instrumentation.
  • As a passionate educator, they will leverage their expertise to engage and challenge students, fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible to meet the course learning objectives, create a positive learning environment for students, participate in department activities, engage with team members, support continuous improvement initiatives within the department, and other duties as specified in the collective agreement.
Qualifications
Qualifications:

Candidates must have a solid foundation in process instrumentation and process control with hands-on practical experience in testing, industrial installation, commissioning, operation, or maintenance.
Knowledge in one or more of the following areas is also required:
  • Control systems equipment including PLCs and/or DCSs (e.g. DeltaV)
  • Commissioning and troubleshooting process control devices and loops
  • Process equipment and plant operations (processes, case studies, application examples etc.)
  • Instrumentation documentation and standards.

Experience in the following areas is desirable:
  • Control systems with industrial networking & cybersecurity
  • Systems integration (Ethernet, Industrial protocols)
  • Design and implementation of industrial networking and common industrial interfaces and protocols (e.g. DeviceNet, ProfiNet, Modbus, OPC-UA, Ethernet/IP)
  • Design, implementation, and testing of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
  • Process instrumentation including flow meters, analytical instrumentation, and control valves.
  • Safety practices as applied in industrial settings.
  • Broad process knowledge of multiple industries such as pulp and paper, mining, refining, power boilers will be considered an asset.

Additional required qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline is required. Examples include: instrumentation engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical or mechatronics engineering, process or chemical engineering, and applied physics. Candidates with this level of education are also expected to have a minimum of five years of relevant, hands-on industry experience.
  • A Diploma in a related technical field will also be considered where candidates have a minimum of 15 years of relevant, hands-on industry experience.
  • Effective command of the English language, both written and oral, is essential.
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) is desirable.
  • Experience working with technologists and entry-level engineers is desirable.
  • Post-secondary teaching experience or industry relevant presentation experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience with curriculum development is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to learners and provide a positive learning environment to students working at different skill levels including international students and students requiring accommodation is an asset.

Salary Range Salary Range: $63,150 - $110,238 per annum.
Additional Salary Information
Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
