Position Summary
BCIT’s Vice President’s Office is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Associate Vice President, Academic. This position provides leadership and strategic direction to a broad portfolio of academic programs and supports. Collaborates closely with the Provost on all matters of academic administration and provides advise on matters related to academic planning, policy and governance. Fosters a culture of excellence in teaching and learning across BCIT. Provides strategic direction on visioning and planning of innovative program models and ensures a culture of high academic standards, financial viability, and industry relevance of all programs. Establishes strategic partnerships within the Institute by participating in committees, consultations and key Institute engagements.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participates as a member of the Provost & VP’s leadership team, providing input to development of the division’s overarching strategies that align with the Institute’s strategic plan, and sharing responsibility for achievements and success. Acts as a champion of the Institute’s vision, mission and values.
  • Serves as the principal deputy for the Provost in all matters of academic administration and provides advise on matters related to academic planning, policy and governance. Develops strategies, plans, standards, and processes for a diverse portfolio of academic programs and supports. Reports on risks, opportunities, achievements, and key initiatives.
  • Fosters a culture of excellence in teaching and learning across BCIT. Leads the development and implementation of the Institute’s teaching and learning strategy and identifies priorities related to instructional development, curriculum design, technology-enabled learning and evidence of effective teaching, with an emphasis on digital and advanced instructional models.
  • Provides strategic direction to Agile and Work Integrated Learning initiatives across BCIT, integrating industry needs, alternative credentialing and complementary pathways of educational delivery. Partners with Deans and Directors on development of academic programming.
  • Provides strategic leadership to BCIT’s institutional research and strategic enrolment planning functions, developing meaningful insights into Institute performance, opportunities, risks, impacts, and solutions. Works with leaders across BCIT to develop a data-informed culture.
  • Provides strategic direction on visioning and planning of innovative program models. Oversees the program review and quality assurance framework and practices to ensure a culture of high academic standards, financial viability, and industry relevance of all programs.
  • Oversees the Institute’s sustainability efforts and ensures a collaborative and consensus-based approach to achieve the sustainability vision. Positions BCIT as a local and global leader in sustainability.
  • Consults with Provost to assess new product and services opportunities, institutional partnerships, or issues brought forward by the BCIT community. Assesses internal requirements and available resources and engages affected partners. Identifies solutions and communicates with Deans on implementation and operationalization.
  • Oversees space planning and sourcing function and ensures optimum solutions are implemented. Investigates and addresses complaints relating to space resources.
  • Partners with school districts, colleges and universities, government authorities, and other external organizations to raise the Institute’s profile. Maintains strong partnerships with business and industry to ensure that academic program outcomes are aligned with requirements.
  • Monitors and recommends best practices for alignment in a competitive post-secondary landscape. Attends external academic events and liaises with BCIT’s Student Association, Faculty and Staff Association and BCGEU unions as needed.
  • Provides broad direction, coaching, development and performance management for reporting department and functional leaders, and also oversees the division to ensure adherence to best practice in people management.

  • Master’s degree in a related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive management experience in a post-secondary environment, including academic leadership roles in a unionized setting
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Expert knowledge of academic/educational systems, standards and best practices (national and international), as they pertain to programming, curriculum development, academic quality assurance and Ministry requirements and processes
  • Advanced leadership skills with ability to provide advice, direction and guidance to program areas, while influencing change and improvement with a strong ability to build and work with higher performing cross functional teams in carrying out major initiatives
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to interact with all levels of internal and external partners, build relationships, establish rapport, influence outcomes, and resolve conflict
  • Advanced business acumen, political astuteness, diplomacy
  • Advanced project management, research and analytical skills, and ability to apply sound judgment in problem solving, evaluating courses of action, and making decisions on complex matters while safeguarding institutional reputation
