Position Summary
BCIT’s Campus Planning and Facilities department is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Building Technologist – Architectural. As a member of the Project Services team, this position is responsible for assisting the manager and project coordinators in the execution and delivery of Institute projects. This position provides technical assistance in the development of project scope, drawings, specifications, schedules, risk analysis, project notices, move, warranty and small project coordination, and post occupancy evaluations.
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops initial project scope and sketches included in project charters that provide planning insight and cover many areas of construction including interior planning, cost estimation and material organization.
  • Meets with other professionals and clients at an early stage to develop the project brief.
  • Gathers technical information through maintenance manuals and as-built drawings to ascertain technical issues that need to be resolved or reviewed for a respective project.
  • Assists with the development of an initial risk matrix for projects including an initial evaluation of environmental, legal and regulatory issues and subsequently design stage risk assessments.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of project database schedules and maintains project schedules as required.
  • Assists with the preparation of concept design, permit, design development and working drawings, and specifications for small scale projects.
  • Arranges for various surveys that are required before work can commence and ensures survey results are integrated into the project.
  • Develops and maintains project update briefs. Prepares design proposals using both computer-aided design (CAD) and traditional drawing methods.
  • Assists with the detailed design process and coordinates design information.
  • Assists with producing, analyzing and advising on detailed specifications for suitable materials or processes to be used.
  • Assists with obtaining feedback from clients and users on post occupancy project outcomes.
  • Identifies potential materials that can be re-used, recycled or demolished.
  • Assists the project coordinators in preparing project status reports.
  • Prepares notices and display boards for respective projects.
  • Assists with the preparation of project descriptions and relevant project information to be posted on the department communications bulletins, such as the website, user groups, etc.
  • Provides assistance with move coordination requirements such as submitting requests and coordinating activities associated with physical moves, telecommunications/data relocations, and furniture moves on an as needed basis.
  • Assists with obtaining the required as-builts and maintenance manuals from consultants and/or contractors at project completion and submits to Facilities Services.
  • Coordinates work orders or projects valued under $10,000 which may include coordination of the warranty work required on a project. Follows up with contractors to ensure work is completed to the satisfaction of the Facilities Services and/or other impacted BCIT departments.
  • Reviews Business Case Proposals from various departments and determines what additional BCIT service providers might be required to review proposals.
  • Prepares content and formats for the Campus Planning and Facilities website.
  • Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record keeping practices, policies and procedures, both BCIT and FOIPOP.
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualifications represent the minimum qualifications required in the future (i.e. to be reflected in job postings) and do not reflect the incumbent’s existing qualifications.

Qualifications:
BCIT Diploma in Architectural and Building Engineering Technology (or equivalent). Two years general construction experience plus two years current practical experience in electronic drawing conversions. Working knowledge of architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical systems including their representation on drawing formats. Demonstrated knowledge of building codes and industry standards. Experience using a variety of software packages with high degree of skill in AutoCad R2011, Archibus FM, MS Office, relational databases, and proven experience using project management software such as MS Project. Must be able to work to and within tight deadlines. Strong conceptual thinking and problem solving skills. Superb written and oral communications and experience drafting and writing a variety of correspondence and reports. Must be a team player with a customer service focus.

Salary Range Salary Grade 8; $54,753 - $59,521 per annum.
Additional Salary Information
External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
