Position Summary
British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is well renowned and uniquely positioned in terms of its provision of highly relevant, real-life, contextual instruction that facilitates the life-long learning needed for career progression and career change. For close to 60 years, graduates of BCIT’s programs have been massive contributors to the social and economic prosperity of British Columbia. Today, BCIT is among the largest polytechnics in Canada and has earned a reputation internationally as an organization laser-focused on strategic workforce development within a global context.
Duties & Responsibilities
Among the many gems within BCIT is its School of Construction and the Environment. Occupying a unique space among BC’s post-secondary institutions, the School of Construction and the Environment offers a broad range of certificates, diplomas, apprenticeships, and undergraduate and graduate degrees in Trades, Engineering, and Applied and Natural Sciences. The School uses an integrated and multidisciplinary approach in many of its programs to ensure graduates of the School are equipped with the technical skills, real-world experience, and problem-solving abilities required to excel in today’s workforce. Faculty are vibrant, active, and enthusiastic leaders in a broad array of areas and operate with sustainability and globalization in mind.

Due to a planned retirement, an opportunity exists for a progressive and visionary leader to assume the role of Dean, School of Construction and the Environment. Leading a talented team of faculty and staff across 77 full-time and part-time programs, the Dean will lead the School’s academic, international, and community activities to new heights.

With over $160M invested in a new campus development, the Dean will play an active role in facilitating the building of the Trades and Technology Complex (TTC) at the Burnaby campus, with the goal of training future professionals to meet the province’s economic and workforce priorities. This individual will serve as a key member of the leadership team and will support academic excellence and promote originality and innovation in teaching and scholarship, thereby continuing to differentiate the School in an ever-changing and highly competitive post-secondary landscape.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring a strong record of accomplishment as a leader who can motivate and inspire a broad range of faculty, staff and students. This experience may have been gained as a Dean, Associate Dean, Chair or Department Head from an applied education environment within a unit relevant to the School of Construction and the Environment. Alternatively, this individual may come from a relevant industry where their senior leadership experience is in evidence, and where they bring some connection to teaching and learning. Regardless of area of expertise, a strategic and forward-thinking mindset will be key, as will an understanding of the competitive educational landscape.
