Position Summary
We invite you to join BCIT’s trades training team. Currently we are seeking applications from individuals that are Red Seal certified in the Joinery Trade and are interested in sharing their knowledge and skills with both Foundation students (future workers) and industry apprentices as a temporary, full-time BCGEU Instructor. Note: This opportunity does have the potential of leading to full-time employment once the preferred candidate has successfully completed a probationary period.
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Classroom instruction to apprentice, entry-level or Industry Services students.
  • Shop and laboratory instruction and supervision.
  • Instructional counseling, evaluation and preparation.
  • Administrative responsibilities, including assignments, examination marking, and student evaluation.
  • Other duties directly related to the instruction of trades and vocational programs.
  • Curriculum maintenance and program enhancement.
  • Input into development of modifications to workshop and instructional areas.
  • Preparing and presenting classroom lectures, practical demonstrations, and working collectively with the Joinery Department Head.

This position is not just about teaching joinery concepts. It requires a person willing to:

  • Motivate students to learn.
  • Teach employability skills and assist with time management, spend the extra effort with students who are struggling and challenge the students who are excelling.
  • Commit to teaching excellence and preparation of outstanding graduates is foremost.
Qualifications
MINIUMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • joinery/Cabinetmaker Certificate of Qualification and Certificate of Apprenticeship with an Inter-Provincial Red Seal endorsement.
  • Five years’ current work experience as a journeyperson.
  • Experience working with apprentices in a supervisory role or teaching experience; and
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to develop and instruct the curriculum.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to demonstrating superior shop and communication skills, have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • An additional four years that includes Shop/Supervisory skills.
  • Finishing, Shaper operation and curved woodwork, veneering.
  • AutoCAD, CNC panel saw operation and programming, CNC machining centre operation and programming.
  • Effective command of the English language, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and develop a collegial environment.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and a strong desire to teach.
  • Completion of the Provincial Instructors Diploma Program would be an asset.

Salary Range Salary Range: $68,375 - $101,563 per annum.

Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
